Dr. Ambedkar Foundation Schemes for Inter-Caste Marriage and Relief to Victims of Atrocities

The Dr. Ambedkar Foundation originally launched these schemes to promote social integration and provide a safety net for those affected by caste-based discrimination. The first component, the Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages, was designed to encourage the breaking of caste barriers by providing a one-time monetary incentive to newlywed couples where one spouse belongs to a Scheduled Caste and the other belongs to a non-Scheduled Caste community. This initiative aimed to reduce social prejudice and foster a more inclusive society. The second component provided financial relief and rehabilitation to victims of atrocities committed against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, ensuring they receive immediate support for legal, medical, or relocation expenses following incidents of violence or discrimination. In a significant administrative shift to improve governance and eliminate duplication of efforts, these schemes have recently been merged with the larger Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) administered by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. By integrating these specific foundation-led initiatives into the national framework, the government aims to streamline the delivery of social welfare, ensure a more uniform distribution of funds across all Indian states, and simplify the application process for beneficiaries. The merger ensures that the core objectives—incentivizing social reform through marriage and protecting the rights of marginalized communities—continue to be met under a more robust and sustainable fiscal structure. This consolidation allows for better monitoring of outreach and ensures that the financial assistance reaches the most vulnerable sections of society without the hurdles of multiple bureaucratic channels.
