The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) was launched by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare to increase the reach of farm mechanization to small and marginal farmers and in regions where the availability of farm power is low. Recognizing that mechanization is a key input for modern agriculture, the scheme seeks to reduce the cost of cultivation and improve overall productivity. A major focus of the mission is the promotion of 'Custom Hiring Centers' (CHCs). These centers allow small farmers, who may not be able to afford high-end machinery like tractors, harvesters, or specialized tillers, to rent equipment at affordable rates. This ensures that the benefits of technology reach the grassroots level without the burden of high capital investment. Additionally, the scheme provides financial assistance or subsidies for the purchase of various agriculture machinery and equipment to individual farmers. The program also focuses on creating awareness through demonstration of equipment in farmers' fields and capacity building through training and testing centers. By improving the Farm Power Availability (FPA), the mission aims to make Indian agriculture more competitive, sustainable, and profitable for the smallholder. It also encourages the creation of high-tech hubs for high-value crops and promotes rural entrepreneurship by involving rural youth in the operation of hiring centers. Through these integrated efforts, SMAM bridges the technological gap across different states, ensuring that modern farming techniques are not just limited to large-scale landholders but are accessible to every motivated farmer across the country.
